Saint-Louis is one of the most beautiful crystal factories in France and Europe, just like Baccarat. With its status as
“Royal Glassworks” in the 18th century, it quickly established itself as one of the great manufacturers of French decorative arts.
Its master glassmakers and master tailors will produce table services, lighting, decorative objects and other high-quality pieces. Saint-Louis uses the techniques of molded, blown, single or multi-layer colored crystal (overlay), of the size by wheel, hand-made acid etching, etc.
Originally, Saint Louis was established on an old glassworks dating from 1586 and located in the Münzthal valley (Saint-Louis-les-Bitche) of the Vosges massif in Lorraine. In 1767, it became the royal glassworks of Saint-Louis. Louis, during the reign of Louis XV.
Participation in Universal Exhibitions, diplomatic gifts, equipment for cruise ships like the "France", and tables at the Élysée will contribute to the reputation of the Saint-Louis crystal factory.
In 1989, the luxury house Hermès took a stake in the Cristallerie de Saint-Louis. It will fully integrate the Hermès group in 1995.
Today, as in the past, the crystal is still mouth-blown, hand-cut, engraved and decorated by hand by master glassmakers and master cutters among the best workers in France. This is the reason why each glass is a little different, especially in terms of its weight which can vary slightly.
Baccarat is a small Lorraine town of 4,500 inhabitants. Its famous internationally renowned crystal factory alone has more than 600 employees, including around twenty Meilleurs Ouvriers de France.
Thanks to ancestral know-how, the objects that have come out of the ovens since the 18th century are true jewels of the French art of living. The Baccarat crystal factory was founded in 1816 by the financier and industrialist Aimé-Gabriel d'Artigues on the site of the former Sainte-Anne glassworks. In 1764, King Louis XV gave authorization to the Bishop of Metz to create a glassworks on his land in Baccarat.
Synonymous with excellence and exception, Baccarat has been lighting up the luxury market for 250 years! First supplying the Court of France with glass, chandeliers and candelabra, it soon seduced maharajas, tsars, sultans and emperors. The list of his sumptuous clients is rather long: the Emperor of Japan, the Shah of Persia, the Maharaja of Gwalior, the Sultan of Brunei, the Tsar of Russia Nicholas II, and of course the Elysée Palace!
